Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have been partnering with other mobile firms in an aggressive manner this generation. The former sought out DeNA immediately to grow its mobile presence, and the latter is teaming up with China giant NetEase to grow the Pokémon IP in the region.
As announced during The Pokémon Company’s recent press conference, Pokémon Quest is coming to China with some upgrades. They report that over 1.7 million players have already signed up in China, and that new PVP features as well as social concessions are being added to that region exclusively. The firm is pointing out that this is the first mobile Pokémon game to be released in China, and that NetEase “is working with The Pokémon Company to bring more Pokémon games to the country.”
As Nintendo said recently in a financial Q&A, they don’t expect China to be a massive presence in the near future as it pertains to their day-to-day operations, but eventually, it will be.
