The wind down and slower paced setup at the end of My Hero Academia Season 3 wasn’t squandered with Season 4’s first episode. For those of us who haven’t read the MHA manga, the team at animation studio Bones makes it clear in this first episode of Season 4 that the ferocity from villains and disruption among the heroes we saw in past seasons was just the beginning of what’s to come.
This impressions piece has vague but mild spoilers for the first episode. If you want the premiere to be a complete surprise, you’ll want to stop reading here.
The MHA Season 4 premiere put on by Funimation at Anime Expo 2019 starts with a heavy declaration that sets both a shocking but exciting tone for the upcoming season. Even with that impactful start, though, it’s still balanced with some genuinely great humor I’ve come to expect from MHA without it diminishing the weight of the first few minutes.
