The past five years or so have been very rough for the X-Men comic book line. While there have been a handful of strong titles in that time (All-New Wolverine, X-Men Red), the X-Men line as a whole has struggled to generate a cohesive, exciting direction post-Secret Wars, despite multiple relaunches and creator shake-ups. What was once the biggest superhero franchise of them all now feels like an afterthought next to the likes of the Avengers and Spider-Man. But if anything can shake the X-Men out of their long slump and make these comics shine again, it’s bringing Jonathan Hickman back into the Marvel fold to revamp the Merry Mutants. House of X is an enticing start to what’s quickly shaping up to be the most exciting X-Men relaunch in many years.
