Warsaw is a game in which you play through the entirety of the Warsaw Uprising. There’s a very good chance you haven’t heard of the Warsaw Uprising. That’s probably because, among the tales of victory-against-all-odds that tend to make up western World War 2 school textbooks, it doesn’t quite fit in.

In 1944, as the Nazis’ grip on power began to slip, the Polish underground resistance mounted a huge operation to liberate Warsaw. After a 63-day battle across the city, the resistance lost, with at least 150,000 civilians killed, and much of the city razed to the ground in retaliation. According to Warsaw producer Krzysztof Paplinski, asking those who do know about the Uprising will generally result in one of two (very different) responses; either it was a glorious act of doomed heroism, or a futile, irresponsible way to get yet more young Poles killed as the war came to a close.
