The latest set of Nintendo financials have hit and there’s a lot to unpack here, but we’ll start with the 3DS.
Amid bi-monthly discussions about whether or not the 3DS is going the way of the dodo, Nintendo is reporting that the now-eight-year-old-portable sold 200,000 units this past quarter (April-June 2019). The publisher notes that this is a “44.9% decrease on a year-on-year basis,” but also reports that software sales hit 1.48 million.
Currently, that puts the 3DS at 75.28 million units sold to date, but there’s another key number here: the handheld also managed to peddle 379.60 million units of software in eight years. Strong software sales are something Nintendo points to constantly, so despite the slower rollout in recent years, they’re still pushing tons of first-party games: games, mind, that are still at or near full MSRP.
Nintendo is reporting that on the Switch side, the console/handheld hybrid moved 2.13 million units this past quarter, with 22.62 million units of software sold, bolstered by strong continued sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Odyssey, and Smash Ultimate. These new figures put the Switch at 36.87 million hardware units sold in just over two years, and Nintendo is betting big on the Switch Lite to help push those numbers up.
