Speaking with PlayStation Blog, Infinity Ward’s design director Joe Cecot has revealed that consoles will support mouse & keyboard controls for their dramatic-looking shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

But as the classic control system – a staple of shooters since their inception – has been shown time and again to hold a reaction and speed advantage over standard controllers, online matchmaking in Modern Warfare will take player peripherals into consideration. So there shouldn’t ever be a case of M&K players squaring off against pad users. Players will be locked into their control choices pre-match and will be unable to switch out during the game.

Mouse & keyboard support for consoles is essentially a given, seeing as how Modern Warfare also welcomes cross-platform play (for the first time) between PC and console users. At first I was concerned that separating players by control method would risk splintering the playerbase, but given the three platforms on offer, as well as the literal army of players that plug into CoD multiplayer every year, I don’t think it will present an issue.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches October 25 on PS4, PC and Xbox One.
