The D23 footage for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker dropped yesterday, and like every Star Wars trailer before it, it’s left widespread speculation in its wake. Specifically, much of the discussion is centered around the trailer’s now signature final moment: the reveal of Rey in a black cloak, with a double-bladed red lightsaber. Will the sequel trilogy’s protagonist actually turn to the Dark Side? Maybe, maybe not, but that might not be the right question. Rather, what does this signify for Rey and how she relates to her predecessors, Anakin and Luke?

After all, judging by her own journey and the ones of those who came before her, Rey reckoning with her dark side in The Rise of Skywalker was simply a matter of time.
