House of X and Powers of X are exactly the sort of aggressive course-correction the X-Men line has been needing for years. At long last, it feels like the franchise is moving forward with clear purpose rather than recycling the same old tropes. House of X #4 is one of the clearest signs yet that nothing and no one is safe as Jonathan Hickman continues laying the foundation for Dawn of X. No matter how where the tragic events of this issue lead, more sweeping changes are surely in store for our mutant heroes.
It’s just as well Marvel shipped two issues of House of X in a row, as the previous chapter left viewers on a major cliffhanger. The X-Men are currently embroiled in their most important mission ever, destroying Orchis’ Mother Mold factory before it comes online and inevitably leads to the creation of Nimrod. That conflict takes on an even greater desperation here, as the X-Men find themselves stranded on Sol’s Hammer and effectively carrying out a suicide mission with no hope of returning home.
