Virtual-On is a kick ass mech combat series that doesn’t get nearly enough love today.
A lot of folks probably remember encountering its unique cabinet in the arcade years back, but the franchise also hit multiple consoles since its 1995 debut. Virtual-On was so popular in my friend group that we used to play system link money matches. Years later when I headed off to college, nearly no one I spoke to had even heard of it. Okay, but enough reminiscing: this story is relevant, I swear!
Although it was revealed last year, Sega is finally ready to deliver on its promise of a Tanita Twin Stick supported Virtual-On on PS4. Announced by way of their day two TGS livestream, the company is bringing Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Masterpiece: 1995-2001 to PS4 on November 27 in Japan for 4,500 yen (roughly $40). It will support online play, and the three-pack will include the original Virtual-On, Oratorio Tangram, and Virtual-On Force.
Note that this series spanned many years so the visuals are going to be wildly different, as each game was released in 1995, 1998, and 2001 respectively, spanning multiple generations. Everyone has a favorite (I’ve always been partial to Tangram), but you won’t have to choose, as all three main games are part of the package (there were two spinoffs: one is an action-adventure, the other is a light novel).
