With Hallmark, Lifetime and now Netflix getting in on the game, fresh Christmas rom-coms have entered a new era of self-parody. Even so, it’s still a joy when a deliciously kooky one makes it to the big screen with big names behind it and bigger stars in front of it. Enter Last Christmas.
Coming straight off the heels of Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke is the glue that holds the elements of Last Christmas that do work together, exuding enough natural charisma that she might just become the next Reese Witherspoon. But maybe that feeling just comes from the overall sense that this film was made 15 years ago, when theatrical rom-coms were at their absolute nuttiest (remember Witherspoon’s Just like Heaven, in which she haunted Mark Ruffalo’s apartment?).
