Earthquake Bird is now in limited theatrical release and debuts on Netflix on November 15.
Based on Susanna Jones’s acclaimed novel of the same name, Earthquake Bird wastes no time diving into the mystery at its center: Who killed Lily Bridges?
Before the film even introduces this vivacious American girl (Riley Keough), the chief suspect in her disappearance is called in for questioning by the Japanese police. By all accounts, Swedish ex-pat Lucy Fly (Alicia Vikander) is mild-mannered and pleasant. She spends her workdays as a translator in Tokyo. In her free time, she plays in a string quartet, poses as muse/model to her photographer boyfriend Teiji (Naoki Kobayashi), and patiently mentors new-to-town Lily. She’s also the last one who saw Lily alive and under less than friendly circumstances. This leads police to wonder: could a festered friendship have turned to murder?
