Full spoilers for The Flash continue below.
Over six seasons of The Flash, we’ve seen Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) tempted by darkness and alternate possibilities, and every time, it has usually ended up coming at a cost. With a Crisis (on Infinite Earths) coming less than two days away in series’ time, Barry is forced to confront his insecurities at a time when he knows he has seen many variations of his world’s end.
“The Last Temptation of Barry Allen, Part 1” was a mixed bag for me. It hits when it moves forward and lagged a bit for me whenever we were stuck in Barry’s mind, as these are tropes that I’m frankly over in the various series in the Arrowverse. One might argue that such a psychological story is the hearty meal that comes before the “dessert” that will be next week’s inevitable confrontation between Bloodwork (Sendhil Ramamurthy) and Team Flash, but for now, Ramsey Rosso’s attempt at getting Barry to accept his “lifeblood” felt like the show was treading on all-too-familiar territory.
