The shock here wouldn’t be that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the number one movie this weekend, but in how much it made – a whopping (estimated) $176 million domestically.

While not on par with the openings of The Force Awakens ($248 million) or The Last Jedi ($220 million), The Rise of Skywalker is still one of the biggest box office debuts of the year and, per Variety, the third-best opening for a movie in December – behind the two aforementioned sequel trilogy movies.

Grabbing another $198 million internationally, Episode IX now stands at $374 million worldwide.
