Astronomers have discovered a wave-like, gaseous structure in the Milky Way galaxy – which has been dubbed Radcliffe Wave, after the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study – and is leading researchers to rethink everything that has since been known about how the Milky Way structure is understood.

Announced on January 7 at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Honolulu, and reported by CNN, researchers from Harvard University were given the data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia spacecraft and analyzed it to conclude their findings.
