The game storyline starts with Robert, who has a very sad and difficult life. Robert Hill was going the right way in life, he was employed at Bird Seed Company, however, the game starts from Robert waking up in a Mental Health Facility. He is suffering from anxiety, depression and severe memory loss. Hence, meaning he had something very terrible happened to him.
