As you can see, there’s no shortage of places for free tax preparation. For most people, the free option is more than enough to file and (hopefully) claim your refund. When you start adding in things like itemized deductions, investment income, and other complications, your best bet for filing your taxes is to try one of the more advanced pieces of tax software, or even hire an accountant.
That being said, even the most complicated tax situations can still be filed for free if you’re willing to put in the work. No matter what your situation might look like, you can visit the IRS website and get started filing. If you’re up for the challenge, I say go ahead and try. But I still recommend getting some professional help if you have a mountain of paperwork to contend with and can’t tell the difference between a 1099 and a 1099 MISC.
