Perhaps even more so than in the world of film, the video game industry just won’t let a brand name die, because with a recognisable IP there’s always the opportunity to make some money.
Why risk tens of millions of dollars on risky, bold new ideas when you can just sequelise and reboot existing ones until the end of time?
That’s clearly what was on publishers’ minds when they refused to let these concrete video game endings lie, instead undoing them with follow-ups that, regardless of their eventual quality, couldn’t help but feel a tad unnecessary.
