A Quiet Place: Part II is set to be released in theaters on March 20, 2020, and it appears that it will fill the role of being both a prequel and a sequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place.

SPOILERS AHEAD for 2018’s A Quiet Place.

A Quiet Place: Part II’s director John Krasinski also directed and played Lee Abbott in the first film, a character who sacrificed himself to save his family. However, Lee will still make an appearance as Part II will give viewers a glimpse of “Day 1″ of the alien invasion, which takes place prior to the events of the 2018 original. You can watch a scene from Part II depicting Lee Abbott during Day 1 in the video below:

The official trailer for A Quiet Place: Part II shows Emily Blunt’s Evelyn Abbott, Millicent Simmonds’ Regan Abbott, and Noah Jupe’s Marcus Abbott as they fight to survive and stay silent without Lee, confirming we will also see the continuation of their journey.

These two perspectives appear to be setting up Part II as an expansion of A Quiet Place’s world instead of it being a traditional sequel. Krasinski and Blunt have both echoed that fact.

As reported by Collider, Krasinski was hesitant to commit to making a sequel. However, with his wife and co-star Emily Blunt and Paramount’s support, he found the way to make it work thanks to Blunt’s idea to view the film as “not a sequel,” but more of a “second book in a series”:

“That’s why I got really excited, because for me certainly the most fun I’ve ever had in my career as a writer was writing this, because I got to play in the most exciting world,” Krasinski explained on The Big Picture podcast. “It was actually Emily, of course, who articulated it better than me. She said the same thing, it was like, ‘No way, don’t do a second one,’ and then I pitched her my idea and she was like, ‘So you’re definitely doing that.’ She said, ‘But it’s not a sequel. It’s the second book in a series,’ she said, ‘It sounds [like] semantics but it’s true, it really is—you’re not doing anything that’s like, alright I’m gonna take all the things you love and just kinda repeat them but in a different way.’ It’s not A Quieter Place, it’s sort of an exploration of getting to live in the circumstances, and that’s really fun.”

As reported by CNET, Blunt told MTV International that Krasinski was very interested in a prequel and showing how the world found its way into the “current apocalyptic state.”

These ideas appear to have become reality as A Quiet Place: Part II will continue the story from the original, but also give more context into the world that is forced to stay quiet.
