Roberto Orci will be writing a Spider-Man spin-off movie for Sony, according to a rumor from The Wrap. The title, main characters, and subject of the film are unknown at this time.
Orci was a writer on The Amazing Spider-Man 2, two live-action Transformers movies (the 2008 original and 2009’s Revenge of the Fallen), and two Star Trek movies (the 2009 reboot and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness), as well as TV shows Fringe, Alias, and Hawaii Five-0.
Curiously, the report says that the spin-off film will be a part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe with the likes of Venom and the upcoming Morbius but it will not be linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s quite the perplexing statement given that the first Morbius trailer went out of its way to show that it takes place in the MCU by referencing both Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, which are set in the MCU. The trailer showed Spider-Man street art demonizing the wall-crawler for killing Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home and ended with the surprise appearance of Michael Keaton’s villain Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming.
So how could this new untitled Spider-Man movie be linked to Morbius but not the MCU? Perhaps Sony is starting to build out its own Marvel universe filled with characters from the Spider-Man mythos that doesn’t connect to the MCU. That appeared to be what Sony was doing with Venom, which had no connections to the MCU, but seemed to change with the MCU connective tissue shown off in the Morbius trailer.

Then again, rather than featuring Holland’s Spider-Man, the street art in the trailer depicted Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and the art seemed to be based on an image pulled from the Spider-Man PS4 video game version of that costume, so it’s hard to say what Sony’s plan is in regards to Spider-Man these days.
The other movie titles listed in the report as being part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe include Nightwatch, Silk, and Silver and Black, which have all been rumored to be in various stages of development over the past several years.

Orci could be writing one of those movies or something else altogether. Sony controls the screen rights to Spider-Man and some 5,000 related Marvel characters, so there are a lot of options to choose from. Other films we’ve heard reports about include solo films for Kraven the Hunter, Jackpot, and Madame Web.
As for Spidey-related flicks already on the schedule, Jared Leto’s Morbius debuts on July 31. Venom 2 — directed by Andy Serkis starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kassidy/Carnage, and Michelle Williams as Anne Weying — also hits this year on October 2.
