Morbius star Jared Leto only just found out about the coronavirus pandemic because he was doing a 12-day silent meditation in the desert where he was cut off from all outside communication.
“Wow. 12 days ago I began a silent meditation in the desert. We were totally isolated. No phone, no communication etc. We had no idea what was happening outside the facility,” Leto posted on Instagram. “Walked out yesterday into a very different world. One that’s been changed forever. Mind blowing — to say the least. I’m getting messages from friends and family all around the globe and catching up on what’s going on. Hope you and yours are ok. Sending positive energy to all. Stay inside. Stay safe.”
While the coronavirus has been in the news for months now, it was only in the past week that the United States began to implement strong reactive measures to help stop the spread of the virus.
Movie theaters and bars have been shut down in larger cities like Los Angeles and New York City while restaurants have switched to take-out only, many concert tours have been canceled or indefinitely postponed, various movies and TV shows have been delayed, many companies have instructed their employees to work from home, local grocery stores have been packed with customers buying up every last canned good and roll of toilet paper, and streets are empty as public health ordinances advise people to stay in their homes to help “flatten the curve.” At the time of publication, the number of coronavirus cases has reached 194,515 across the world with 7,893 deaths and 81,085 recovered.
So it’s understandable why Leto would be so shocked after emerging from his silent retreat.

Leto isn’t alone in being out of the loop on the coronavirus. The cast of Germany’s currently-airing season of Big Brother have been confined since February 6 as per the rules of the show and are oblivious to the new state of the world. They will soon be informed of the situation on live television.
Leto is the star of Sony’s upcoming Marvel movie Morbius where he plays the gifted Dr. Michael Morbius who gains vampire-like powers after his attempt to cure his rare blood disease goes freakishly wrong. The movie has finished shooting and is currently in post-production. It’s still slated to release on July 31, although given the number of delays we’ve seen with other movies so far, we’ll have to wait and see if the film sticks to that release date.
