April might not historically be known as a month for blockbuster game releases, but April 2020 has something to say about that. A number of big games are set to release that should make all kinds of gamers happy. Since these are strange times and shipments of non-essential physical goods are being delayed, oftentimes weeks out, we thought we’d focus our purchase links on digital downloads this month. For a wider look at upcoming releases, check out our mega-list of video game release dates for 2020 and beyond. But without further ado, here are the biggest video games releasing in April 2020.

Resident Evil 3

resi-2Release Date: April 3

The month kicks off with an apocalyptic bang with a from-the-ground-up remake of 1999’s Resident Evil 3. Much like last year’s RE2 remake, this one brings the game fully into the present, with all the graphical and gameplay improvements you’d expect from a modern title. You can read our 9/10 Resident Evil 3 single-player review, or check out the demo on Xbox One, PS4, or PC to see for yourself how this remake is shaping up.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Just a week after the RE3 remake comes another, very different, game from the ’90s getting a similar treatment. Final Fantasy VII Remake is a fully revamped take on the Midgar portion of the original game. While that section only took up half a dozen hours of the original’s 50-hour runtime, Square Enix promises they’ve packed enough into this remake to justify it as a full release. If you’re on the fence about it, try the demo for free.

Trials of Mana

trials-2Release Date: April 24

Yet another remake is another of April 2020’s biggest game releases. This one’s a bit different, though. While it was released in Japan in 1995 under the name Seiken Densetsu 3, it didn’t make its way to the West until last year’s Collection of Mana, which featured a newly localized version of the original game. This remake updates the graphics, combat, and more to bring a whole new take on an RPG classic. If you want to try before you buy, check out the free demo on PS4, Switch, or PC.

Gears Tactics

gears-tacticsRelease Date: April 28

The Gears of War games are known for their intense, real-time third-person action. But based on our Gears Tactics preview, it seems that the franchise also works exceptionally well in a new turn-based tactics format that bears resemblance to XCOM. Taking place 12 years before the first game in the series, Gears Tactics follows a new set of characters as they go to war against the Locust. The PC version of the game will release April 28, with the Xbox One version to follow at a later, unspecified, date.

Predator: Hunting Grounds

predator-hunging-groundsRelease Date: April 24

If you’ve seen the movies, you’ll know exactly how fitting it is that Predator: Hunting Grounds is an asymmetrical shooter. This game has you and a team of operatives try to complete missions while you’re being hunted by an alien that’s evolved to be a highly advanced killing machine. Alternately, you can take the role of the Predator and bring the pain to the team of humans yourself. Check out our Predator: Hunting Grounds preview for more details.
