Westworld’s first season debuted on HBO on October 2, 2016, starring Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores Abernathy, Thandie Newton as Maeve Millay, Jeffrey Wright as Bernard Lowe, Ed Harris as the Man in Black, Tessa Thompson as Charlotte Hale, James Marsden as Teddy Flood, Luke Hemsworth as Ashley Stubbs, and Anthony Hopkins as Robert Ford, among many other cast and characters. The high-tech story of a futuristic theme park where the rich can interact with lifelike humanoid androids — called “Hosts” — subsequently received a second season, which debuted on April 22, 2018. Season 3’s eight episodes debuted on March 15, 2020, with Aaron Paul joining the cast as Caleb Nichols and Vincent Cassel as Engerraund Serac.
As the show progressed in its first two seasons, some Hosts like Dolores and Maeve began to achieve self-awareness and fight against their human overlords. Philosophical questions like what is the nature of being a sentient being became the crux of the show. Westworld also established a reputation for playing with its narrative, depicting different time periods simultaneously without explicitly letting the viewer in on that fact until late in the game. Hence the reveal that Ed Harris’ older, nihilistic Man in Black was the same character as Jimmi Simpson’s younger, idealistic William.
Westworld is based on the 1973 movie which was written and directed by iconic sci-fi author Michael Crichton. A sequel to that film was released in 1976 called Futureworld, and a short-lived TV series based on the concept, called Beyond Westworld, aired in 1980 for only three episodes before it was cancelled (the remaining two episodes were never broadcast).
In our Season 3 premiere episode recap, we said the following: With new characters, locations, and interests, Westworld is back and more dynamic than ever, now totally reinvigorated after two solid but inconsistent seasons. While it no doubt has plenty of secrets left to reveal, the action is simpler and more straightforward, with an emphasis on character development and world-building that make the show feel more satisfying moment to moment.” Are you ready to jump in?
