WarnerMedia has revealed a May 2020 release window and $14.99 price point for its streaming service HBO Max. HBO Max will attempt to compete with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and the new Disney+ platform.

WarnerMedia’s decision to use its already established HBO branding could help attract new subscribers who are familiar with the premium network’s prestigious history, which includes The Wire, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, and Band of Brothers. And perhaps even more importantly, HBO Max will be the only place you can watch all 236 episodes of Friends, after Netflix recently paid $100 million to maintain the rights for just one more year, plus stream every season of South Park. Apart from those iconic comedies, viewers will also be able to stream shows and movies from Warner’s impressive collection of properties: The CW, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, TNT, and of course, HBO, along with movies like Joker.

HBO Max will also be developing new original movies and original series, including a live-action, Greg Berlanti-produced Green Lantern series.

WarnerMedia on HBO Max

“HBO Max will bring together the diverse riches of WarnerMedia to create programming and user experiences not seen before in a streaming platform. HBO’s world-class programming leads the way, the quality of which will be the guiding principle for our new array of Max Originals, our exciting acquisitions, and the very best of the Warner Bros. libraries, starting with the phenomenon that is Friends,” said Robert Greenblatt, chairman, WarnerMedia Entertainment.

As for why WB is emphasizing the HBO name with this streaming service, Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly tells us it’s all about brand value and the reputation HBO has cultivated over the years. “HBO, the core of the business, has always been in long-term value creation and trying to build a cultural mark. And that’s something we’d like to extend throughout the whole brand.”
