Parallel universes are something any sci-fi fan worth their salt knows about thanks to decades of pop culture, where they have depicted everything from an evil Mr. Spock with a goatee to a Spider-Verse where Miles Morales teams with fellow web-slingers. Purported evidence of a parallel universe was put forth back in 2015 and now scientists believe they have discovered evidence of not only a neighboring parallel universe, but one where time runs backward.
According to the New York Post (via The Daily Star), scientists conducting cosmic ray detection experiments in Antarctica have uncovered what they believe is evidence of a parallel universe where the laws of physics differ from our own.
They reportedly detected high-energy particles rising out of Antarctica, which is contrary to how these particles are supposed to behave, since they’re supposedly only able to be detected when they come down from space. “To detect a heavier particle – a tau neutrino – coming ‘up’ out of the Earth would imply that these particles are actually traveling backwards in time,” according to the Daily Star.

Scientists believe such a parallel universe would be the result of the Big Bang over 13 billion years ago where not only was our universe formed but this parallel one was as well.
The New Scientist breaks down the possible discovery like this:
“That strange finding was made in 2016. Since then, all sorts of suggestions rooted in known physics have been put forward to account for the perplexing signal, and all have been ruled out. What’s left is shocking in its implications. Explaining this signal requires the existence of a topsy-turvy universe created in the same big bang as our own and existing in parallel with it. In this mirror world, positive is negative, left is right and time runs backwards.”
However, the team’s findings aren’t universally believed to be evidence of a parallel universe, let alone one where time — to us — runs backward.
As experimental particle physicist Peter Gorham – lead author on the paper documenting the phenomenon he dubbed an “upside-down cosmic-ray shower” – conceded to The New Scientist, “Not everyone was comfortable with the hypothesis.”
Until there’s more scientific consensus on these findings, we’ll just have to stick to pop culture for our fix of parallel universes and time craziness, such as in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Tenet.
