HBO Max pulls shows from all across WarnerMedia’s properties, and that includes anime streaming service Crunchyroll. While HBO Max’s little anime library is probably the smallest of all the streaming services, it has an edge on the rest simply for having Studio Ghibli movies and through its obvious curation by Crunchyroll.

If you’re already immersed in the anime community, it’s likely you won’t find many surprises among the 17 anime series available on HBO Max. Many of the biggest and best anime it offers are available on many other streaming services. However, for those of you who don’t watch anime season to season or are just getting into anime, this is a solid batch to dig into. HBO Max’s Crunchyroll Collection has classics like Rouinin Kenshin as well as brand new anime like In/Spectre and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken.

Anime on HBO Max

Most of the anime series available range from good to excellent with a few exceptions. In fact, it’s easier for us to tell you which anime to skip rather than provide just a few suggestions. Berserk, Schwarzes Marken, and The Testament of Sister New Devil should either be on the very bottom of your watchlist or not on it at all. Berserk (2016) is a rather disappointing adaptation of the classic manga, but it still has a lot of action. You’ll find better animated and more exciting action elsewhere on this list, though.

Below is the list of all anime available through the Crunchyroll Collection:

  • 91 Days
  • Berserk
  • Bungo Stray Dogs
  • Erased – IGN’s Anime of the Year of 2016
  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  • In/Spectre
  • Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
  • Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!
  • Kill la Kill
  • Kiznaiver
  • Konosuba – God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!
  • Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World
  • Rokka – Braves of the Six Flowers
  • Rurouni Kenshin
  • Schwarzes Marken
  • The Testament of Sister New Devil
  • Your Lie in April

When Are We Getting More Anime on HBO Max?

Don’t expect new anime on HBO Max every month. Instead, a press release revealed that the Crunchyroll Collection will be updated every quarter:

“Crunchyroll will curate additional top anime titles for HBO Max each quarter, cultivating fresh offerings that appeal to new and existing anime fans including Hunter x Hunter and Death Note coming to the streamer within the first year of launch.”

It’s clear HBO Max isn’t being used as an alternative platform for the newest simulcast anime. If you’re looking for those, you’ll want to stick with subscribing to one of the leading anime streaming services. For more information on HBO Max, be sure to read IGN’s guide to HBO Max.
