Anyone who’s been paying attention knows there are too many streaming services out there (and counting–lookin’ at you, Peacock), but I would argue Hulu offers the best value. It gets you a great library of just-aired TV, plus tons of shows and movies, and a growing catalog of Hulu originals. Right now you can start a free 30-day trial of the standard Hulu service, or a free 7-day trial of Hulu Live TV.

The reason it’s such a great value is that, despite the wealth of content, the standard service only costs $5.99 per month after the trial ends. That’s much cheaper than most other streaming services, although it’s worth noting that plan has commercials. You can get a commercial-free subscription for $11.99 a month.

Alternately, Hulu Live TV is the company’s full-on streaming cable replacement, complete with everything in standard Hulu, plus the usual set of live TV channels. It’s just like YouTube TV or Sling TV, and costs $54.99 per month after the free trial.

But standard Hulu is what I have and would recommend to pretty much anyone. Thanks to Hulu’s recent partnership with FX, you can stream new original shows like Devs (by the maker of Ex Machina and Annihilation), Dave, and the critically acclaimed Mrs. America. Along with the originals are tons of fantastic FX shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fargo, American Horror Story, Legion, Justified, and many more.

huluHulu’s own original shows have been particularly stellar this year. You’ve got Normal People (an artsy show about horny Irish teens), the delightful comedy Ramy, and (my personal favorite) The Great. The Great is a vicious, darkly comedic, “occasionally true” retelling of the reign of Catherine the Great and Emperor Peter. Watch the first episode to get a sense of the show’s zippy-yet-cruel humor, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll be hooked.

Beyond that, Hulu also has tons of classic shows, like Cheers, ER, The X-Files, and Seinfeld. It even has I Love Lucy, I mean come on. It has Food Network and HGTV shows. It has Rick and Morty and Bob’s Burgers. It has a bunch of stuff for kids…

Basically, there’s zero chance you’ll open the app and not be able to find something to watch. Check out our semi-recent Hulu review for more of the pros and cons. And you get a free month to try it out, and it’s only $6 a month after that. All I’m saying is it’s worth a look.
