ORIGINAL STORY: Planes, Trains & Automobiles is reportedly being remade with Will Smith and Kevin Hart in the starring roles.

Variety reports that Smith and Hart will also produce the movie and Aeysha Carr, who previously wrote and produced Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Carmichael Show, will write the script. The remake reportedly has the same plot as the original where two strangers must work together to make it home to their families.

The original movie was released in 1987 and starred Steve Martin and John Candy. It was written and directed by John Hughes, and the first movie directed by Hughes after Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Planes, Trains & Automobiles ended up as the 25th highest grossing movie of 1987 worldwide, which is ahead of movies like Full Metal Jacket, Wall Street and Spaceballs.

It marks another remake for Smith, who recently came off a live-action remake of Disney’s Aladdin where he played the Genie. It’s currently the biggest box office hit of Smith’s career. Smith is also reportedly producing a remake of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that reimagines the show as a drama.

Hart recently starred in a remake of The Intouchables with Bryan Cranston and a sequel to the rebooted Jumanji. He will next be seen in the drama movie Fatherhood, which is currently set to hit movie theaters in April 2021.
