One of the best purchases I ever made was the Akira 35th Anniversary boxed set a few years back. The price at the time was too good to pass up, so I snatched one up for myself and have enjoyed my decision ever since.
If you aren’t aware, the Akira manga is amazing. You’ve probably seen the movie, which is also awesome, but the nature of feature films means so much of the story had to be cut and adapted to fit into into a digestible length. Not knocking the movie here, either: it’s a work of unparalleled art. But the story in the manga is so much deeper, I can’t recommend it enough.

Inside the display-worthy box are 6 volumes of the complete Akira series in hardcover, each with a unique dustcover. There’s also an Akira Art Club book, filled with amazing art and a nice little addition for collectors. On top of that, there’s a patch you can sew onto your favorite red leather motorcycle jacket, to let everyone know how serious you are about your health.
This isn’t the lowest price ever, but it’s the lowest price it’s been in a long time. We’re actually closer to the 40th anniversary of Akira than we are to the 35th anniversary at this point, and the boxed set tends to go out of stock for long periods. I recommend picking it up now rather than later, but you could always wait and hope it comes down again.
