Baldur’s Gate 3 is now out in Early Access and RPG fans are diving right in. Whether you’re a CRPG fan or a newcomer to the world of Dungeons & Dragons, the character creation and the story appeals on a mass level. One aspect of the latest D&D adventure that I’m wholly in love with, however, is a feature that made Dragon Age: Origins so deeply personal – a good ‘ol fashioned campfire.

In Origins, players could interact with all of their companions, without being restricted by the party number limitation. This helped players develop friendships and romantic relationships with the various companions, and allowed fans to deeply immerse themselves in the daily lives of Thedas residents. The campfires in Baldur’s Gate 3 work in a similar fashion, and it’s here that I find myself anxious to get back to.

How it works is simple: at night, players can rest alongside their companions around a campfire. The campfire is where hardened exteriors soften and life stories are told. False bravado, cold walls, and defense mechanisms don’t weigh much here and that’s where players truly get a chance to get to know the deep layers of each companion. This feature also provides a nice little recap to the day’s events in-game, and provides a good opportunity for players to see how their companions react to certain decisions made on a deeper level.

This feature is not new to Baldur’s Gate 3, clearly, but it is an amazing addition that creates lifelike relationships and provides a more meaningful sense of immersion when it comes to taking to this universe. It’s a feature I personally loved with everything I had in Dragon Age: Origins, and it’s a feature that translates incredibly well into Baldur’s Gate 3.

From Divinity Original Sin 2 to the Dragon Age franchise, there are so many beloved games that are reflected in Baldur’s Gate 3 while still insuring that this game feels unique. It’s an incredible adventure, so far. Early Access is available now and Larian Studios has been very transparent that there are bugs. Find those bugs, report them, and see them be wisked away because the studio has been amazing when it comes to staying on top of each report.
